Fígols de Segre is a tiny municipality in the Lleida comarca of the Alt Urgell, and like hundreds of Catalan and other Republican-zone towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency in 1937 when small-change coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Republican government had authorized local councils to produce these vales or moneda local from 1936 onward, creating a patchwork of hyperlocal paper that was theoretically valid only within the issuing municipality.

Litografia Lafont i Miralles produced notes for numerous Catalan ajuntaments during this period, which is why the printing quality varies less than the issuers do.
