Esplús is a village in the Huesca province of Aragon — during the Civil War, the Republican-controlled municipalities of Aragon issued their own fractional paper currency because the central government in Valencia could not supply sufficient small change to keep local commerce moving. These emergency municipal issues, known as "papel moneda local," flooded out of hundreds of small towns between 1936 and 1938, most in tiny print runs that were only ever used within the issuing municipality itself.
The Tipografia C.A.M. in Barcelona produced notes for dozens of Aragonese councils simultaneously, which kept costs manageable but makes printer attribution less meaningful than it might seem — the political and economic story is entirely local.
