Ellar is a small municipality in the comarca of Pallars Sobirà, in the Catalan Pyrenees. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan towns and villages — many with populations under a few hundred — issued their own fractional paper currency under Republican authority after the gold and silver coinage disappeared from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. The Comité Agrícola de Ellar was one of the more remote issuers in this series, serving an agricultural community with virtually no banking infrastructure.
The Garrió Monistrol reference number being incomplete signals how thinly documented this specific issue remains.
