El Vendrell is a small Catalan town in the Baix Penedès comarca, and this note is one of hundreds of emergency municipal issues — moneda de necessitat — that flooded Catalonia and the rest of Republican Spain after July 1936, when the coin supply effectively collapsed and the central government could not plug the gap fast enough. Local councils, cooperatives, and even individual businesses filled the vacuum themselves.
Arts Gràfiques Barnadas was a local press, and the engraver credit to Borrull suggests in-house craft rather than a specialist security printer. These hyper-local productions vary wildly in execution quality, and Barnadas held up reasonably well.
