El Vendrell, a small Catalan municipality south of Tarragona, was among hundreds of Spanish towns that printed emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's metal coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent from rural supply chains by mid-1937. These local emissions, generically called "moneda local" or "bitllets municipals," were technically illegal under Republican monetary law but tolerated by necessity.
Arts Gràfiques Barnadas was a local press, not a specialist security printer, which is exactly what the output looks like under close examination. Paper and ink quality vary considerably across surviving examples of this Turró-catalogued type.
