El Bruc issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War period, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate small-denomination coinage in circulation forced thousands of Catalan municipalities to print their own locally redeemable notes. These ajuntament-issued pieces were technically illegal under central banking law but were tolerated out of pure necessity.
Turró 539 is among the smaller-format municipal emissions from the comarca of Anoia. The town itself carries outsized historical weight — it was near El Bruc in 1808 where Napoleonic forces were famously repulsed by local irregular fighters, a fact the municipality clearly never let anyone forget.
