25 Céntimos Donzell d'Urgell

Donzell d'Urgell is a hamlet in the Noguera comarca of Lleida province, and in 1937 it had a population of perhaps a few hundred souls. Like dozens of similarly tiny Catalan municipalities, its ajuntament issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from local circulation — silver and copper had been hoarded, melted, or simply vanished into the war economy.

Arts Gràfiques Ilerda produced notes for several of these micro-issuers out of Lleida, which kept print runs small and quality variable. At this scale of issuer, survival in any grade is the primary consideration.
