Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón, a small municipality in Albacete province, issued fractional emergency currency during the Spanish Civil War — a period when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate coin circulation forced thousands of towns and villages to print their own small-denomination notes. These locally issued pieces, known collectively as "billetes de necesidad," were theoretically redeemable but in practice only circulated within the issuing municipality's immediate area.
Survival rates vary enormously by town. Smaller municipalities often printed modest quantities and kept poor records, making Gari attributions the primary reference for pieces like this one.
