Opmerkingen

Castellote is a small hilltop town in the Maestrazgo district of Teruel, and its municipal council issued emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War when the collapse of small-denomination coinage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These hyper-local emissions — produced by hundreds of municipalities across Republican-held territory simultaneously — were legal for transactions only within their issuing municipality, creating a patchwork monetary system that varied town by town.

Teruel province changed hands violently during the war. The Battle of Teruel in late 1937 into 1938 was among the most brutal of the conflict, and notes from this district had exceptionally short useful lives. Survival rates for Castellote emissions are accordingly low.
