Castellnou de Seana is a small municipality in the comarca of Pla d'Urgell, Lleida province, and this 25 céntimos note belongs to the enormous wave of local emergency currency — known collectively as "moneda de necessitat" — that Catalan and Spanish municipalities issued from 1936 onward when the Civil War drained metallic coinage from circulation almost entirely. Hundreds of town councils, many with populations under a thousand, became de facto issuers almost overnight.
Imprenta Popular in nearby Bellpuig supplied notes to several area municipalities, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between issues. The manuscript signature and official stamp were applied individually at the ajuntament, making each example technically unique.
