Campillo de Arenas is a small municipality in the Sierra Mágina range of Jaén province, and this 25 céntimos piece is a product of the anarcho-syndicalist local economy that briefly flourished across Republican Spain during the Civil War. The Sociedad de Trabajadores de la Tierra — the land workers' union affiliated with the socialist UGT — issued fractional currency like this to substitute for coinage that had vanished almost entirely from rural circulation by late 1936, hoarded or melted down as the war made metal scarce.
Hundreds of Spanish municipalities and collectives printed their own emergency fractions. The thick card construction was a practical response to the near-impossibility of sourcing proper banknote paper in wartime Andalusia.
