One of hundreds of emergency municipal issues that flooded Republican-held Spain after the July 1936 military uprising disrupted the normal supply of small-denomination coinage. With the peseta's fractional coins hoarded or simply absent from circulation, local councils — including tiny coastal municipalities like Campello in Alicante province — were legally empowered under Republican decree to print their own cartones and papeletas to keep local commerce moving.
The Gari Monetary catalog documents dozens of Campello issues across multiple denominations; the D suffix here indicates a distinct type within the 25-céntimos series, likely differentiated by color, signature, or control numbering.
