Calzada de Calatrava is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, and this 25 céntimos note is one of hundreds of emergency fractional issues produced by Spanish town councils during the Civil War after the Republic's small coin supply effectively collapsed. The Generalísimo's forces controlled traditional minting infrastructure, and copper and nickel were being redirected to the war effort — so municipal councils across loyalist Spain printed their own cardboard substitutes, valid only within their own borders.
The Gari Montaner cataloguing of these local Republican emisiones de guerra remains the primary reference for this material, and many issues from villages this size exist in quantities of fewer than a dozen surviving examples.
