During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination metallic coinage in Republican-held Catalonia forced hundreds of local entities — cooperatives, municipalities, trade unions — to issue their own emergency paper. The Sindicat Agrícol de Cabanes, a small agricultural cooperative in a village near Tarragona, was one of thousands that did exactly this in 1937. These hyper-local emissions were never intended to circulate beyond the immediate community, often just a single street or market.
Imprenta Trayter in Figueres produced a notable quantity of these Catalan wartime locals. The thick card stock was a practical choice — it held up marginally better than thin paper in daily hand-to-hand use among farm laborers and market vendors. Most were redeemed or destroyed within months as the war situation shifted.
