Bolaños de Calatrava, a small municipality in Ciudad Real province, issued emergency fractional scrip in 1937 as the Republican zone's coinage shortage became acute. The central government's requisitioning of silver and the hoarding of bronze left local councils across Castilla–La Mancha printing their own solutions. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities did the same, which is precisely why the Gari Monetary catalogue remains incomplete for so many of them — the documentation simply never existed in a systematic form.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: these pieces were handled constantly as change in daily market transactions, and thin paper would not have survived a week.
