Bellcaire d'Urgell is a tiny municipality in the Lleida province — its 1937 population was well under a thousand — yet like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency when the Republic's small-change supply collapsed entirely. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local emergency issues, but enforcement of any standardization was effectively impossible, which is why notes from the same printer in Tàrrega can vary considerably in paper weight and impression quality across different municipal clients.

Turró catalogues over a thousand such local issues from this period, and Bellcaire's is among the more obscure.
