Beceite is a small village in the Matarraña comarca of Teruel province, and in 1937 it was deep within the Aragonese front of the Civil War. Like hundreds of other Republican municipalities cut off from the Banco de España's supply chains, the local council printed its own fractional currency to keep daily commerce functioning — small coins had vanished from circulation almost immediately after July 1936 as hoarding stripped the money supply bare.

These hyper-local emissions, collectively known as "billetes locales" or "moneda de necesidad," were produced under almost no standardized conditions. The official stamp served as the primary — often the only — authentication mechanism.
