Ferrocarriles de Sarriá y Cataluña was a private suburban railway operator running lines between Barcelona and the surrounding hill towns — Sarrià, Sant Gervasi, and beyond. When the Civil War disrupted the Spanish monetary supply from 1936 onward, hundreds of Catalan municipalities, businesses, and institutions issued their own fractional emergency currency. This note is one of them: small-denomination vales or cartones circulated as practical substitutes when Republican-zone coinage nearly vanished from daily commerce.
The square format was a deliberate choice for many Catalan transport issuers — it distinguished their scrip from official currency at a glance. The Generalitat de Catalunya ultimately sought to rationalize these emissions under decree, but enforcement was uneven throughout the war.
