The Comité Económico de Cines was one of hundreds of workers' committees that collectively managed Barcelona's industries after the anarcho-syndicalist CNT effectively took control of the city following the July 1936 military coup attempt. Cinema workers, like those in transport, utilities, and textiles, issued their own fractional currency when the Republican government's small change evaporated almost overnight — hoarding and panic stripped copper and silver from circulation within weeks of the uprising.
These committee-issued vales circulated only within specific local economies and were never legal tender in any formal sense. The CNT's collectivization of Barcelona's cinemas lasted until the May Days of 1937, when Republican government forces reasserted control and dismantled most of the workers' collectives.
