Baeza's wartime scrip belongs to the enormous category of Spanish Civil War emergency municipal issues — local ayuntamientos across Republican-held territory printed their own small-denomination notes from 1936 onward once fractional coinage effectively vanished from circulation. Baeza, a small Andalusian town in Jaén province, remained in Republican hands through most of the conflict, and issues like this one plugged the gap left by hoarded or melted coin.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the standard reference for these Spanish local issues. The #217-B suffix indicates a distinct variety within the Baeza 25 céntimos grouping — likely a paper or typography variant from the primary emission.
