Alfonso XIII authorized exploratory pattern coinage in the mid-1920s as part of broader discussions about reforming Spain's small-denomination silver series, which had seen little substantive change since the Restoration coinage of the 1870s. These pieces never advanced to circulation — the political instability of Primo de Rivera's dictatorship, under which Alfonso reigned as a largely compliant monarch, left monetary reform perpetually deferred.
The Aureo reference situates this among a small documented group. Survivors are almost invariably in mint state, having never left official hands.
