Alfafara is a small municipality in the Valencian interior — population well under a thousand even today — and its wartime paper issues belong to the vast ecosystem of Republican emergency fractional currency that proliferated across Spain from 1936 onward. When the Civil War disrupted the coin supply, hundreds of local councils printed their own substitutes. Most circulated only within their own village boundaries, redeemable in theory, worthless in practice once the issuing authority collapsed or changed hands.
