Alcoy — the Valencian industrial town known for its textile mills and a fierce anarchist tradition — became one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities forced to print emergency fractional notes after the Republic's coin supply collapsed in 1936. Metal had been hoarded, melted, or simply vanished from circulation as the Civil War disrupted the economy at every level. Local councils, workers' collectives, and even individual businesses stepped in to fill the gap with hastily produced paper.
The Gari Mon catalogue documents extraordinary variation within Alcoy's emissions alone — multiple types, subtypes, and paper stocks exist across denominations, making precise attribution genuinely difficult without physical comparison.
