Alcoletge is a tiny municipality in the Lleida comarca of Catalonia, and its wartime scrip belongs to the vast ecosystem of emergency local currency — *moneda local de guerra* — issued by Spanish Republican towns during the Civil War after the collapse of fractional coin supply in 1936–37. The Generalitat de Catalunya nominally oversaw these emissions, but in practice each municipality printed what it needed, when it needed it, with whatever materials were at hand.
Turró catalogues hundreds of these Catalan issues, and Alcoletge's is among the more obscure. Survivorship is largely a matter of chance — towns this small had negligible circulation areas, and few notes made it out of the immediate locality before becoming worthless.
