Abrera is a small municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, southwest of Barcelona. Like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absorbed by the war economy. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized municipal issues, and printers like M. Berdós in Barcelona handled runs for multiple towns simultaneously, which is why production quality across these local notes tends to be consistent even when the issuing bodies were tiny.
The official stamp serves as the primary authentication device — without it, the note was not legal tender even locally.
