Ababuj is a village in the Teruel province of Aragon — during the Spanish Civil War, Teruel became one of the most contested and destructive fronts of the conflict. The near-total collapse of the national banking system in Republican-held territories forced municipalities, including the smallest ones, to issue their own emergency fractional currency. Ababuj's population at the time was a few hundred people at most. The note's entire economic reach would have been measured in meters.
