This is an essai struck at the Paris Mint in 1913, produced as part of a broader push to reform French small denomination coinage before the First World War interrupted everything. The "big module" designation distinguishes it from a companion piece of reduced diameter struck in the same campaign — both were rejected, and France never adopted a nickel 25-centime coin in this format for circulation.
Henri-Octave Duplessis modeled the figure of Peter for this series. Pattern pieces of this type survive in small numbers, nearly always in above-average preservation given their non-circulating origin.
