The note is framed by a border of olive branches, with a shield bearing a caduceus at lower left and a shield bearing an anchor at lower right, flanking the central coat of arms of the Principality surmounted by a crown. The face value is expressed in both words and numerals at centre, accompanied by two manuscript signatures of the Minister of State and the Treasurer General of Finances, below the legend noting the deliberation and sovereign decision dates of March 1920. The inscription NON REMBOURSABLE appears at the foot of the design. |

A decorative frame of garlands, flowers, and intertwined orange and olive branches encloses the central vignette of the Monaco Rock viewed from the sea. Above the vignette, a finely ornamented medallion — its upper arc cut by the date 1920 and its lower arc by the denomination 25 — contains the overprint ESSAI in red. The engraver's name and printer's imprint appear below the central composition. |

Monaco issued its first paper money in 1920 out of sheer necessity — wartime metal shortages had stripped the Principality of its coin supply, and these small-format emergency notes filled the gap for everyday transactions. The essai in violet is a printer's trial piece, not a circulated denomination; the issued version of P#2 carries different coloration, making the violet essai a distinct collecting category rather than simply an early example of the type.
Veuve A. Chêne — a Monégasque printing firm run by the widow of its founder — handled both the trials and the issued notes, an unusual arrangement given how small the operation was relative to the scale of national currency production. Albert Berthe's engraving credit is one of the few documented instances of his work on Monaco material.
