The Banca Italiana Agricola Commerciale di Bologna was one of dozens of regional Italian banks issuing their own fractional notes in the years immediately following unification — a stop-gap response to the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage that plagued the new kingdom throughout the 1860s. The Italian government repeatedly attempted to suppress these unofficial emissions, but local commerce depended on them too heavily for enforcement to stick.
Printed and engraved entirely in Bologna by Giulio Wenk, this 25 centesimi note never left local circulation in any meaningful sense. At this denomination, redemption was essentially theoretical.
