The Banco Nacional of Argentina issued this fractional note during a period when small-change shortages were chronic across the River Plate region — silver coins were routinely hoarded or exported, leaving commerce dependent on paper substitutes at denominations that no central authority had previously bothered to print. The American Bank Note Company produced the series in New York, as it did for most South American banking clients of the period, shipping finished notes across the Atlantic for local distribution.
