Peru's 1965 coinage came during a period of mounting fiscal pressure under the Belaúnde Terry administration, when inflation was steadily eroding the purchasing power of the sol. Brass substitutions in subsidiary coinage were a practical response to rising silver and nickel costs across Latin American mints during this decade. The Casa de Moneda de Lima, one of the oldest operating mints in the Western Hemisphere — founded in 1565 — produced this issue domestically rather than contracting foreign facilities, as Peru had done for several earlier series.
