Carlos Finlay, the Cuban physician who identified the mosquito as the vector for yellow fever transmission in 1881, spent decades largely ignored by the international medical establishment — it was Walter Reed's U.S. Army commission in 1900 that received the bulk of credit for confirming his work. Cuba has consistently pushed back against that framing, and this coin is one expression of that. Finlay received the Mary Kingsley Medal in 1900 and was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Prize before his death in 1915.
