Cuba maintained a dual-currency system from 1994 until its formal unification in 2021, with the peso cubano (CUP) circulating alongside the convertible peso (CUC) at a fixed 24:1 ratio. This coin belongs to the CUP series, the currency of ordinary Cubans, which saw renewed minting investment in 1994 as the Special Period austerity following Soviet collapse forced the government to stabilize domestic circulation after years of near-total economic contraction.
The nickel-plated steel construction replaced earlier nickel compositions as raw material access became constrained through the 1990s embargo tightening.
