Additional information

By 1979, Colombia's 25 centavo piece had become nearly vestigial — inflation had so eroded its purchasing power that the denomination was effectively phased out within a few years of this issue. The Banco de la República had been reducing the metallic value of smaller denominations throughout the 1970s, and this aluminium bronze alloy was itself a cost-containment measure introduced earlier in the decade as copper prices climbed on world markets.
