Guatemala's silver coinage of the early 1880s was struck under the government of Justo Rufino Barrios, whose Liberal Reform had only recently dismantled the monetary system inherited from the colonial period. The 1882 issue came just three years after Guatemala adopted a new decimal currency framework, and the mint at Guatemala City was still working through the mechanical and metallurgical adjustments that framework demanded.

The .835 fineness places this squarely in the Latin Monetary Union standard, which Guatemala adopted by convention rather than formal membership — a practical alignment with regional trade rather than any diplomatic commitment.
