The Banco Comercial de Corrientes was one of several provincial quasi-banks operating in the Argentine interior during the 1860s, issuing fractional notes to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued commerce far from Buenos Aires. Twenty-five centésimos was about as low as paper currency got — these circulated more like tokens than banknotes, changing hands in market transactions where coin was simply unavailable.
Lithographer Alberto Larsch operated in Buenos Aires during this period, handling small commercial and governmental print work for provincial clients who lacked local facilities. The Corrientes issues are among the more obscure provincial emissions of the decade.
