Military canteen tokens in paper form were a practical Dutch solution to the perennial problem of small change disappearing from mess facilities — soldiers pocketed coins, and the mess ran short. The Cavalerie-Mess at the Prins Willem III Kazerne in Amersfoort issued these scrip notes for internal use only, redeemable solely within the mess itself, keeping the float intact and the bar tab manageable.
Drukkerij B. Kramer was a local Amersfoort printer with no particular connection to official currency production, which shows. These were functional objects, not prestige items. The orange paper was likely a deliberate choice to distinguish the scrip from any official tender at a glance.
