Obverse description Spade-shaped cast bronze coin (bu) with a rectangular handle surmounted by a circular hole at the top. The broad flat body bears two large Chinese characters 貨布 (Huo Bu, meaning 'currency spade') cast in relief in the field, flanked by vertical dividing lines running the length of the coin. The characters are rendered in the archaic Small Seal script style characteristic of Wang Mang's monetary reforms, with bold, deeply incised strokes. The shoulders of the spade are squared, and the foot is bifurcated in the classic bu spade form. The surfaces display a patinated bronze finish consistent with ancient casting.
