The Gambia's post-independence coinage history is complicated by two distinct decimal systems — the country decimalized in 1971, replacing the old shilling-based structure inherited from British colonial administration. The Central Bank has periodically reissued denominations with updated imagery tied to national development priorities, and the 1998 series reflects that pattern rather than any single monetary event.
KM#57 is the second butut coinage generation for this denomination, distinct from the earlier FAO-linked issues of the 1970s.
