The legend BANICA is inscribed in evenly spaced raised Latin letters along the lower periphery outside the beaded border. The Independent State of Croatia — the Ustaše puppet regime installed by Germany and Italy in April 1941 — moved quickly to establish its own monetary identity, commissioning pattern coinage before the state had fully consolidated control of its own territory. This 25 banica pattern in gold was never approved for circulation. The banica subdivision itself was a revival of pre-WWI Croatian monetary nomenclature, a deliberate political signal wrapped in numismatic form.
