Said bin Taimur's reign ended violently in July 1970 when his own son, Qaboos, deposed him in a palace coup backed by the British. This coin, issued in the final year of Said's rule, was struck while Oman remained one of the most isolated countries on earth — fewer than ten kilometers of paved road in the entire country, no public schools, no hospitals outside the capital. Qaboos immediately withdrew all coinage bearing his father's name, making the 1970 issues a terminal series.
