The 1993 Taejon Expo — formally the Daejeon International Exposition — was South Korea's first World's Fair, held from August to November of that year under the theme "The Challenge of a New Road of Development." It attracted 108 participating nations and over 14 million visitors, functioning as much as a showcase of South Korean industrial and technological ascent as an international event. The Bank of Korea issued a suite of commemorative coins tied to the exposition, of which this gold piece was the highest denomination.
