Ecuador dollarized its economy in 2000, abandoning the sucre entirely after a currency crisis that wiped out savings across the country. This coin was struck four years after that collapse — a commemorative issued in a denomination that no longer existed as legal tender, priced for collectors rather than commerce. Quito's designation as an Ibero-American Capital of Culture provided the occasion.
