This piece was issued to mark the centennial of Sukarno's birth — he was born June 6, 1901 — rehabilitating a figure who had been systematically erased from official Indonesian memory during Suharto's New Order regime. After Suharto's fall in 1998, the political space finally opened to commemorate the founding president without ideological risk. The coin appeared just three years into that new atmosphere.
Sukarno died under house arrest in 1970, denied medical treatment by the regime that deposed him.
