Issued the year Togo's constitution was suspended and the Rassemblement du Peuple Togolais entrenched Eyadéma as sole legal political authority, this gold piece belongs to a series of personality-cult coinages commissioned during a period when the regime was actively constructing an official mythology around the 1967 coup. Eyadéma had by this point declared himself the survivor of a plane crash at Sarakawa — an event his government promoted as miraculous and which became a cornerstone of state propaganda.
The .917 fineness places it firmly in the 22-karat commemorative category common to Francophone African issues of the 1970s, most struck by the Monnaie de Paris on contract.
