The Landesbank der Rheinprovinz was a provincial institution headquartered in Düsseldorf, and like dozens of regional German banks and municipalities in 1923, it exercised the emergency authority to issue Notgeld as Reichsbank currency collapsed under hyperinflation. This 25 Milliarden Mark note — twenty-five thousand million — was denominated at a figure that would have been inconceivable eighteen months earlier. By October 1923, such sums were barely sufficient for daily transactions.
Provincial Notgeld of this type was demonetized rapidly after the Rentenmark stabilization in November 1923, leaving large quantities unspent and intact.
