Obverse description The obverse of the host coin displays the classic Pillars of Hercules design of the Spanish colonial 8 Reales, with two crowned globes flanked by the crowned Pillars of Hercules rising from stylized waves, and the date 1765 in the exergue. The circular legend reads VTRAQUE VNUM with mint mark Mo and assayer mark visible in the field. Applied prominently over the central field of this host coin are two Portuguese countermarks: an earlier oval stamp bearing the letter 'M' and the subsequently applied oval countermark 'MR', both struck by authority of the Portuguese Crown to validate the coin for circulation in Mozambique at a tariffed value of 2400 Réis.
