Reverse description The prominent Brazilian countermark of 1663 applied under King João IV, consisting of a crowned oval cartouche bearing the numeral '240' in bold relief, indicating the revalued denomination of 240 Réis. The crown above the oval is of the Portuguese royal type, with fleurs and arches clearly rendered. Underlying design of the host Spanish colonial cob is partially visible around the countermark, with vestiges of the cross and tressure pattern of the original reverse.
