| 正面描述 | Portuguese royal countermark applied to a host Spanish or Spanish Colonial 4 Reales (cob coinage). The countermark consists of the numeral '240' surmounted by a royal crown, punched into the field of the host coin. The underlying host coin displays the characteristic cob-style devices of Spanish or Spanish-American silver coinage, including partial castle and lion motifs typical of Philip IV-era macuquina coinage. The irregular flan and crude striking are characteristic of hammered cob silver. The countermark was applied by royal decree of João IV in 1643 to recirculate Spanish-American silver at the revalued denomination of 240 Réis. |
