Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, Archbishop of Salzburg from 1668 to 1687, issued this piece during a period when the Archbishopric maintained aggressive monetary independence, frequently countermarking foreign silver to assert control over regional circulation. The Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg host coin was produced by one of the more commercially active north German mints of the period, and its appearance in Salzburg's currency supply reflects the chaotic cross-border coin flows that plagued the Holy Roman Empire's fragmented monetary system throughout the later seventeenth century.
The Zöttl reference places this among a documented series of Salzburg countermarks applied to foreign groschen types — a practice that was as much administrative as political, tying foreign silver to local tariff schedules.
